Maximum sentences for crimes committed July 1, 1984, and after.

The complete and official text of the statute.
(1) FELONY. For a crime designated a felony for which a sentence of imprisonment is provided, the court shall fix a maximum term of imprisonment, which shall be as follows:
   (a) For a class A felony, life imprisonment, or if the court finds that the defendant has a prior conviction for a class A felony, by a term of not less than twenty years nor more than life imprisonment;
   (b) For a class B felony, by a term of not more than ten years;
   (c) For a class C felony, by a term of not more than five years.
(2) GROSS MISDEMEANOR. For a crime designated a gross misdemeanor, the court shall fix a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than three hundred sixty-four days.
(3) MISDEMEANOR. For a crime designated a misdemeanor, the court shall fix a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than ninety days.
